CAT-2014 might offer a sigh of relief but cut offs for B-Schools could go up!

...
If there’s something that you would really want to know about the upcoming CAT-2014 examinations then it is none other than but the sea changes that have been confirmed about the myriad fronts. Rest assure- there’s no change in syllabus or the content, which means you can carry on your preparations with the same swing but a lot of changes surely went noticeable this time. Now the question that hits the box right on the first go is that how fair it would be for the aspirants to score good percentiles. And also it airs the question about the minimum cut off percentile for the top B-Schools in nation. Surprisingly the changes that have been incorporated are not a trivial one’s but it seems that they have altogether set a brand new scale for evaluations.
Changes are sometimes daunting but sometimes they are equally rewarding too. Like if you talk about the latest changes that have been called in the Common Admission Test then it can be clearly seen that the duration of examination has been outstretched from one hundred forty minutes to one hundred seventy minutes. Now this is surely a cherry on the cake and we shall discuss the same in brief now in order to understand what exactly these changes means to an aspirant.

Unfolded time gap means time management goes easy!
People called it a clever call by CAT when the time duration was revised followed by increased number of questions. Now that you have 30 minutes extra with you- the time allowed per question was automatically axed down from 2.3 minutes to 1.7 minutes. However, this could open more possibility and all that matters is speed, undoubtedly. So surely, striking out maximum number of questions in 170 minutes won’t be a child’s play.
High pressure mounting up every second!
With extra 30 minutes of time for examinations, longer duration will certainly call for a little bit of more practice. Mock tests series have really been proved beneficial in this very regard but one has to be really specific about the appropriate timing and closing a particular question in a given time frame. Certainly, one cannot master the art without even being pushed through some practices. Thus, your first hand encounter with the mock sessions will keep you mentally ready for all the upcoming.
Limited sessions to ensure quick wind up!
Earlier where the CAT was supposed to take place in 40 sessions, the CAT-2014 examination has curbed the same in just 4 sessions stretching over 2 days only. There have been a lot of say in this very regard but if you are really serious about belling the CAT then this year might hold something really good for you.

CAT 2013 Examinations:
Total time allotted: 140 minutes.
Number of questions in each section: 30 each in 2 sections.
CAT 2014 Examinations what’s new
Total time allotted: 170 minutes.
Number of questions in each section: 50 each in 2 sections.
Less time per question, which might probably mean a slight reduction in the level of toughness.

So, a new tweak in the CAT-2014 Examinations seems to be pretty promising and one can surely score a decent percentile with sincere and uncompromised efforts over the time. Nonetheless, it was a dual sided blade that was thrown openly in the air when IIMs allowed a switch between the sections. However, you have to have a razor sharp decision making ability in order to hit the right chord at just the right point of time. And also try to avoid wasting time on one section and killing time when you have an option of opting for comparatively easier questions in other sections. It’s a fair deal and with consistent efforts- who knows that you’re next in the IIMs shortlisted candidates list.

Application of Static Compensator to improve the Power Quality of Grid Connected Induction Generator Based Wind Farm

...
Abstract-Due to large power demand and environmental issues, electrical power generation from renewable energy sources is receiving more attention. Wind energy generation systems are being integrated to power networks worldwide in increasing numbers. The power system is therefore facing new challenges due to intermittent nature of input source. One of these problems is voltage stability in wind farms equipped with squirrel cage based induction generators. Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices can be used for this problem. This paper, investigates the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) application to achieve continuous operation of wind turbine equipped with cage based induction generators during grid faults. The simulation has been done in MATLAB/Simulink framework. It is shown that a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) enhances voltage profile of power grid containing induction generator based wind farm.

This paper has demonstrated the effect of wind energy generation in power systems due to the uncertain characteristics of wind turbine system which causes variations in system voltage. Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) device such as Static Compensator "STATCOM" is power electronic based switch is used to control the reactive power and therefore bus voltages. Results are presented to show that the voltage at bus 25 drops to very low value of .91 pu due to insufficient reactive power but this bus voltage gets improved to 0.98 when STATCOM is incorporated in the system. Thus the voltage and hence power quality of the entire power system due to integration of STATCOM with wind generation is improved.

GA-based Congestion Management in Deregulated Power System using FACTS Devices || IEEE project

...
Abstract--Congestion in the transmission lines is one of the technical problems that appear particularly in the deregulated environment. There are two types of congestion management methodologies to relieve it. One is non-cost free and the other is cost free methods. Among them later method relives the congestion technically whereas the former is related with the economics. In this dissertation congestion is relieved using cost free method. One of the cost free techniques is installing FACTS devices into the system. FACTS devices have a great flexibility that can control the active power, reactive power and voltage simultaneously. SVC and UPFC are two FACTS devices which can relieve the congestion in the transmission lines efficiently. As the FACTS devices are costly hence it is required to find the optimal location for FACTS devices. In congestion management, the objective function is nonlinear hence in solving this function Genetic Algorithm (GA) technique is used to obtain the global optimal solution. This method is tested on IEEE test bus system with FACTS devices and it can be extended to any practical system.

Power system facts
genetic algorithm flowchart

To relieve the congestion in the lines multiple multi-types off ACTS devices are located optimally using genetic algorithm. The following conclusions have been derived:
• With the above proposal it is possible for ISO to find global optimal schedule with the minimum total generation cost.
• In some transmission lines power flows with the OPF generation schedule are very high. Such extra power flow scan be reduced by installing FACTS devices.
• Line loading with SVC is less as compared with the line loading with UPFC.
• It has also been observed that proposed algorithm is also suitable for large systems with more number of FACTS devices, and the results so obtained are found to be encouraging.

Control of a SVC for Power Factor Correction || IEEE Power electronics project

...
Abstract-The question of voltage quality is rapidly increasing.New technologies are introduced and we are facing many new power quality requirements. Flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) are modern devices in power transmission and grid stability. The paper deals with the modelling of a static var compensator (SVC). For this purpose Matlab/Simulink was used. SVC is designed for the implementation in a three-phase 22 kV power line model. Several simulations and tests have been performed in order to examine the function of the proposed control algorithm and SVC system as a whole.
Power electronics projects
At the present, with the increasing demand for the electrical energy and rapidly growing number of new production technologies, the voltage quality requirements are becoming stricter. In order to evaluate the level of the power quality, STN EN 50160 standard was introduced, which stipulates the limits for voltage quality

...
Abstract—This paper presents the power quality improvement in the midpoint converter based switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive using a Vienna rectifier. A conventional bridge rectifier with midpoint converter based SRM drive produces very high level of harmonics content and low power factor at ac mains. The proposed Vienna rectifier with midpoint converter fed SRM drive improves the power factor at ac mains with low current harmonics. It also provides constant dc link voltage and balanced capacitor voltages. This SRM drive with input Vienna rectifier is modeled and its performance is simulated in Matlab/Simulink environment. Moreover, performance of Vienna rectifier is compared with a conventional bridge topology for SRM drive.

What and When of MBA Exams in India

...
What and When of MBA Exams in India

MBA is a Master’s degree in Business Administration, the growing demand of the economy to go global is calling for the need of more people having the knowledge in managing a business which only an MBA degree can provide them. Let’s see what all exams you need to take to get into a good MBA college, how you need to prepare for them and the eligibility criteria etc.
After you have done your graduation, irrespective of what field you chose, whether you are an engineer, IT graduate etc. you will be ultimately either be working for someone or will start a company of your own. In either case, you will be supposed to manage a business or functionality. The knowledge required for running and/or administering a business comes from studying the tidbits of management, thus MBA.
To have an MBA degree has become the need of the hour, with almost all companies asking for a degree in Business Administration. For those who are not looking for a job use the MBA degree to start some venture of their own or advice someone how to go about their business as a freelance advisor.

MBA or No MBA: The crucial decision

With so many MBA colleges opening in every nook and corner of the country, the value of the degree has considerably lowered. However, the theoretical and practical knowledge that comes with getting the degree from a good MBA college in India cannot be ignored in disdain. If not a guaranteed job, an MBA degree will at least land you with the immense knowledge of handling business and the workforce. It can be argued that the knowledge you receive from an MBA degree can be received from working in a company, however the time you will need to grasp the functionalities will be faster when you have studied them in detail well in advance.

MBA Exams in India

Now that you have decided to join the majority of India’s postgraduates opting for doing MBA, you will have to prepare for the entrance exams to get selected in the MBA College of your choice in the future.
The eligibility criteria
The criteria of almost all MBA exams in India are a minimum of 50% in graduation, a graduate degree or the applicant can be a final year graduate. The minimum educational qualification of someone who is eligible to take the MBA exam is 10 + 2 + 3/ 4 years of school plus college.
The List of exams
There are a number of MBA exams that you can apply for in order to get enrolled into an MBA college of your choice. The list of the most famous exam along with the date of enrollment is given below:

Some of the exams have already closed their registration dates for the year 2014; however there are a few left which are still accepting the call for application. It’s time to make sure that you apply for such exams on time; else you will have to wait for the year 2015 to start with the registration process and that will cause a year break.
Other exams that you can take to be eligible for a seat in MBA are:
·        SNAP: Symbiosis National Aptitude Test
·        TAPMI: T A Pai Management Institute Admissions Test

Paper Structure

A typical MBA exam in India follows a similar structure of 4 – 5 sections. In order to be eligible for getting admission in MBA, you are supposed to pass all the sections. The time of exam and amount of negative marking may vary from exam to exam.
The sections that are normally there in all the MBA exams are:
1.     English Comprehension
2.     Data Interpretation
3.     Logical Reasoning/ Analysis
4.     Quantitative Aptitude
5.     General Knowledge
The ranking which is given to every section may vary from exams to exam. In order to pass an MBA exam in India, it is extremely important for you to practice at least previous 5 years question papers of the exam you are applying for, keep in mind the importance of time factor. The time you will be required to finish the paper with minimum negative answers is fixed.

The preparation time for MBA exam is very crucial in order to bag your dream college which will provide a good package placement. Thus it is very important for you to start at the earliest, keeping all factors related to the paper structure in mind. At this point, don’t waste your time thinking what field you would opt for, as you will get plenty of time in college to think the same.

Matlab Based Loudspeaker Testing and Equalization Program-Abstract

...

This project is to develop a Matlab program able to measure the impulse response of the loudspeaker under the test and to use the various DSP techniques to alter and improve this response. GUI will be built to make easier access to various features of this program and to graphically present measured and altered response in a number of useful ways. For equalization, the adaptive filter can balance compensation and modify the sound sources through the LMS algorithm. Hence, the adaptive filter and LMS algorithm will be studied in this project.

The programs have to generate input signal and receive output signal, then analyze those signals to measure the impulse response of the system.
To equalize the impulse response of the system, the adaptive filter which is based on a least mean square algorithm (LMS) should be developed.
The interface has to be designed by GUI.

Solar projects || Electronic projects - Solar powered Radio mini project

...
Solar Panel connected to radio to make a solar radioSolar power provides advantages for remote locations where there is a need for power but no electricity available. For example, if you go to the mountains for a camping trip or to the beach for a day in the sun there are no electrical outlets to conveniently plug in to. You might want to use something as simple as a radio that runs on dc power and you can use solar power for this application since a solar panel supplies dc electrical current. Mini radios, as that shown in the photo run on batteries so are easily converted to a solar radio.
Batteries will work for a day or so but if you need to use the radio for many days you would have to carry a lot of batteries with you and the cost can be very high. Also, there are people that live in areas where power is never available and they do not have an endless supply of batteries. For people that want to run a laptop computer there are commercial laptop solar panels that can be used to run the laptop or charge the computer battery.
Science Fair Project Idea/ Objective:
This is a simple idea that can be added to your science fair project to help demonstrate applications of solar energy. You can also use this solar powered radio as an additional demonstration and test for the science fair topics on Amount of Light that Hits a Solar Panel, Angle of Light that Hits a Solar Panel, Wavelength of Light that Hits a Solar Panel and Concentration of Light on a Solar Panel.
Tip:
You will need to match the amount of power delivered by your solar panel to the amount of power required by the radio. In the above picture we used a solar panel that was rated for 4.5 volts and 100 mAmps and a radio that used 4 AA batteries at 1.5 volts each and rated for 6 DC volts. We tried 2 different makes of radio rated at 6 DC volts and both worked well. You can find these types of radios for less than $10 in chain pharmacy's and discount stores. You might have to get one and just try it with a closley matched solar panel.
Materials:
Ø Solar Panel
Ø Battery powered radio (6 volt) or one that works on 4 AA batteries
Ø Schematic: (large image)
Ø Solar panel and radio schematic for solar powered radio

What to Do:
On this project you will have to do a little discovery on your own depending on the type of radio you find and the solar panel you are using.
In general, you will have to open the radio and figure out how the wiring is configured. In some cases it will be easy if there is one positive lead and one negative lead. The second radio that we converted to a solar radio was a little more complex but we were still able to fairly easily once we understood the wiring.

The Hive is Hungry: Exploring Bee Colony Search and Foraging Behavior through Agent-Based Simulation

...
Despite a lack of high-order communication, honeybee colonies efficiently coordinate search and foraging efforts across a large, dynamic search space. This natural emergent behavior, shaped by nature and evolution, is based on a combination of individual local search strategies, inter-agent communication via "waggle dancing", and collective behavior. Many parts of the real-life algorithm are unknown. We built a simulator to analyze honeybee colony foraging behavior using a variety of algorithms in several different environments. We examine both scouting strategies (as variants of randomized local search) as well as honeybee division of labor allocation in a variety of dynamic environments. (final paper)

(Note, a extension from this work was published at the Swarm Intelligence Conference (ANTS 2010) and won best the student paper award!)

Fingerprint Based Identification System-Introduction

...
The characteristics of the friction skin that generates the fingerprint are unique to each person and remain unchanged from the time of formation until decomposition after death. Identification is made on a system based on the reliable extraction of such features from a fingerprint image. Due to the uniqueness and permanence of this features, also called minutiae, the usage of fingerprint for identification purposes has begun in ancient times, bloomed in the late 1800s and early 1900s and is now the biometric most used in everyday life of human kind. However the fingerprint image in hand is not always of good quality, the image may not be clear, distorted, noisy, etc., and this could be due to many factors including acquisition method and environment condition. Since the performance of the system relies on the quality of the features extracted, in order to compensate for these negative factors, the fingerprint image has to go through different stages in order to be properly matched for identification. These stages are image pre-processing, feature extraction, post-processing and finally matching. The aim of this project is to implement a fingerprint identification system tool with Matlab Software in order to be used for teaching and research purposes by evaluating and comparing the performance of two algorithms for each of the main stages of the identification system.

Requirements
Ø Research in the area of Biometrics and Image Processing.
Ø Implement two algorithms for each main stage of the system and evaluation of the performance of each one in comparison with the other.
Ø Implement a GUI to illustrate the performance of the system.
Ø  Both the system and the GUI have to be implemented using the Matlab Software.

MAZE FOLLOWING ROBOT

...
The robot is a fully autonomous machine that is able to sense its surroundings and perform actions independently.  Autonomous robots have been used in a wide variety of applications from bomb disposal to grass cutting and from space exploration to factory assemblies. The micro-mouse robot showcases many different capabilities of the engineering domain.  The construction of a micro-mouse robot involves the use of circuit building, computer language programming, electro mechanical aspects and power supplies.  For the robot to act autonomously trade-offs must be made between power, speed, weight and maze solving algorithms (the software needed to get to the goal).  Autonomous robots are being developed rapidly in the society we live in and to understand the basic principles that underpin these theories is valuable for any aspiring engineer.
Objectives
The individual objectives are to:
Build a robot that can navigate safely to a given grid reference within the maze.
To be able to memorize and ignore dead ends and navigate safely back to the start of the maze.
To provide a LED map display to the user defining right and wrong paths.
These objectives must be accomplished by sticking to a 50.00 budget, therefore careful consideration of the type of components must be utilised. Deliberation must be managed successfully to find the best component at a suitable price. Meetings with the supervisor are arranged on a weekly basis to discuss progress and any issues or problems that may occur.

There are certain deadlines to meet throughout the year and the project will be on display during the Project Open Day on the 25th April 2014 to students, lecturers and possible future employers.
