  6. Human Resource Management (Elective)
  7. Manufacturing Sciences Lab
  8. CAD/CAM Lab
  9. Mini Project
The subjects may vary from university to university. This semester is a little easy compared to the syllabus of fourth semester. Industrial Automation is very interesting and important subject because these days almost all companies are making their systems and machines automated. Try to understand the subject in depth and also try to a research on a specific topic of automation according to your interest. Labs are easy compared to fourth semester. In fifth semester you can choose an elective subject from a list of subjects such as Automotive Engineering, Robotics and Robot Applications, Rapid Prototyping and Tooling, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Vision, etc. In sixth semester, there will be CAD/CAM Lab and they will teach you a particular designing software (designing software vary from university to university). For my lab it was PRO-E. And the most important thing in your third year is mini project.

There are a lot of important things that you should do during your third year. First, try to join for any certified course that is going to help you in interviews and career. If you are interested in designing, then you can join for courses like PRO-E, SOLID WORKS, CATIA, ANSYS, etc. Many students do engineering just to get a job in any sector (IT, Core, Banks, etc). They can do any programming courses like C, JAVA, etc or can go for IBPS (bank test) coaching. Make sure all these courses have a certificate which is acceptable throughout he world. Second, if you decided to go for higher studies (MBA, MS, M.Tech, etc), then you can join for coaching classes. Third year is the right time to join for such classes. Third thing to do is apply for internships. You can do internships ranging from a period of two weeks to 3 months. You can also do internship abroad during your engineering course. Final step is to make your mini project a huge success.

The subjects for second year production engineering are-

SEMESTER 3
  1. Engineering Mathematics 3
  2. Humanities and Communication Skills
  3. Electrical Drives and Automation
  4. Mechanics of Solids
  5. Metallurgy and Material Science
  6. Machine Tool Technology
  7. Production Engineering Drawing/Machine Drawing
  8. Machine Tool Lab-1
SEMESTER 4
  1. Engineering Mathematics 4
  2. Environmental Science
  3. Theory of Machines
  4. Fluid Mechanics and Machinery
  5. Design of Machine Elements
  6. Thermal Engineering
  7. Electrical and Electronics Lab
  8. Fluid Mechanics and Machinery Lab
The subjects may vary a little from university to university. Second year is the toughest year to study. To be specific fourth semester is the toughest semester of the entire course with all the core subjects clubbed together. Introduction of core subjects starts from third semester. Electrical Drives and Automation can be a bit difficult for students who have no base in physics/electrical. If you have understood Engineering Graphics during first year, then Production Engineering Drawing/Machine Drawing will be easy. In fourth semester, Electrical and Electronics Lab will be very difficult. Only relief in fourth semester is Environmental Science. If you have passed fourth semester, it is like passing the entire course.

Try to take seminars whenever possible and do try to take part in paper presentation competitions. Inquire about all courses available for higher studies like MS, M.Tech, MBA, etc. You might or might not go for higher studies after your course but knowing your interest (either management or technical) is very important. Always do paper presentations according to that interest. If in the end you do decide to go for higher studies, these paper presentations will certainly help you. Next important thing is to start thinking about topics for your mini project which has to be done during third year and about main project which has to be done during fourth year. Always try to do projects according to your higher studies interest. For example, if you are interested in doing MS in Robotics, try to do your paper presentations on Robotics and try to select a topic related to Robotics for mini project and main project. The selection process for MS is becoming tougher because there is a rush towards MS and having done paper presentations and projects on the course is certainly going to give you an upper hand.

GUIDANCE FOR PRODUCTION ENGINEERING-1

online engineering degree/engineering degree online/online engineering courses/engineering technology online/engineering courses online/engineering technician degree online/online engineering technology/electronic engineering online
The subjects for first year production engineering are-
  1. Engineering Mathematics 1
  2. Engineering Mathematics 2
  3. Engineering Physics
  4. Physics Lab
  5. Engineering Chemistry
  6. Chemistry Lab
  7. Engineering Mechanics
  8. Basics of Civil and Mechanical Engineering
  9. Basics of Electrical, Electronics and Communication Engineering
  10. Engineering Graphics
  11. Computer Programming in C
  12. Mechanical Workshops
  13. Electrical and Civil Workshops.
The subjects are almost same for all branches during first year with slight variations from university to university. This year is the easiest year to study because you are familiar with all the subjects (except one or two) and its syllabus. The only problem is that you get a lot of assignments and a lot of workshop/lab record work to complete. It becomes a burden when you keep it till the end. But apart from that you have plenty of time compared to other semesters. You have a lot of time to make friends, take part in activities such as cultural, sports, etc. But this year is the year when you can develop your confidence, management skills, conquer stage fears, handle situations, work under pressure, etc. If you are weak in all these then you should focus in developing such qualities otherwise it is very difficult to get a job because a company is looking for a person with all these qualities. Now the best thing to do to develop such qualities is to take part in Technical Fests that are conducted in various in various colleges. You might be shy to take part in your own college, so it is better to take part in fests that come about in other colleges. The events like Best Manager, Mr.Tech fest, etc helps you in understanding the standard of other students, your weakness, where you have to improve, etc. It is not about winning or losing. it is all about understanding and developing. During the first year you should also try to develop your interest towards your course. There might be students who might be having no idea about computer programming in C because they didn't choose it in higher secondary school. So I advice all those students who are weak in C programming to get an idea about it by referring a book or by going for a C program course. Engineering Graphics is all about concepts, visualizing or imagining an object in three dimensional planes and drawing its different views on paper. Some students find it hard to understand, so I recommend those students to understand the basics of Engineering Graphics before joining for engineering.

CAN PRODUCTION ENGINEERS APPLY FOR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING JOBS IN GOVERNMENT SECTOR?

online engineering degree/engineering degree online/online engineering courses/engineering technology online/engineering courses online/engineering technician degree online/online engineering technology/electronic engineering online
As I have told you before, production engineering is similar to mechanical engineering and therefore production engineers can apply for mechanical jobs in government sector. In government sector there are jobs specifically for production engineers and I understood that there is a huge scope and demand for production engineers even in government sector.

I will tell you my experience- During my final year of production engineering I registered in many government sites such as Public Service Commission (PSC), Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Railways, Air force, Navy etc. During registration i had to fill a lot of online forms such as contact details, family details, educational qualification, upload photo with name and date, upload signature, etc. In qualification form they ask about our highest qualification and I typed B.Tech (B.E) and there is a scroll down option for selecting your branch in which production or mechanical production engineering is available for selection. After registration I received a lot of notifications for recruitment exclusively for production engineers and understood that there is a lot of requirement or demand for production engineers. I even applied for jobs requiring mechanical engineers but there was a notification telling that I am not eligible. Now here comes the benefit of mechanical equivalent certificate. You can say that you are eligible for the desired mechanical engineer post and there is an option for selecting mechanical equivalent certificate. In some cases they tell you to select a minimum number of 10-15 subjects that you have studied from the given list of mechanical subjects (which I am sure we would have studied during our course). In Air force registration, they ask you to select subjects from the given list.

It is an advantage for us that we can apply for production jobs as well as mechanical government jobs.

MECHANICAL EQUIVALENT CERTIFICATE FOR PRODUCTION ENGINEERS

online engineering degree/engineering degree online/online engineering courses/engineering technology online/engineering courses online/engineering technician degree online/online engineering technology/electronic engineering online
First of all let me assure all that production engineering is not lower compared to mechanical engineering. Every student is scared to opt production engineering because they haven't heard of production engineers. This is because in the beginning there was only mechanical engineering and the importance of production and industrial engineering came in the later stage. Hence only few colleges teach production engineering and its importance is growing every year. Many companies including companies abroad specify their requirement for production engineers and its scope is huge.

I have stated in my previous posts that production engineering is similar to mechanical engineering and I have mentioned about mechanical equivalent certificate for production engineers. In the comments of my previous posts I saw that students have doubt whether all colleges teaching production engineering provide the equivalency certificate. Well according to my view point all universities should provide a mechanical equivalency certificate and if I am wrong may be it depends on the university (whether autonomous or not) and their syllabus. In different universities the syllabus for production engineering differs. In certain university the syllabus might be 90% similar to mechanical engineering while in certain university the degree of similarity might be 60% and the universities provide equivalency certificate according to the degree of similarity. For example I did production engineering from Calicut university and I got mechanical equivalent certificate. Calicut university provides mechanical equivalent certificate because its syllabus is more than 85% similar (just 4 subjects and 2 labs different) to mechanical engineering.

Now the truth is that I have never used my mechanical equivalent certificate for any interviews because in the registration form or online form there was always slot for production engineers whether the company was IT or manufacturing based. But it comes to use while applying for mechanical jobs through Public Service Commission (PSC), UPSC, Railways etc.
(If anyone knows any university which doesn't provide a mechanical equivalent certificate for production engineers please leave a comment).

Important- Always inquire your respective universities rather than your college about equivalent certificate. Your college might or might not know about equivalent certificate because after course you have to go to your university (not your college) and apply for the same.

WHAT IS PRODUCTION ENGINEERING?

online engineering degree/engineering degree online/online engineering courses/engineering technology online/engineering courses online/engineering technician degree online/online engineering technology/electronic engineering online
Have you ever been to a factory or industry? Have you seen a factory or industry in television? Have you ever thought how the whole system works efficiently? Who has planned and implemented the whole system, selected the technology, machines and the amount of materials? Well the answer is production engineer. Without a production engineer a company may never operate efficiently. An entire production cycle consists of planning, procurement of materials, managing, manufacturing, distribution and sales. A production engineer plays a major role in all sections except distribution and sales.

Production engineering is some what similar to mechanical engineering. Almost half the subjects are same for both courses. The difference is that production engineering has an upper hand in management side and manufacturing side. Manufacturing subjects gives you knowledge about machining processes (milling, drilling etc), joining processes (welding, soldering etc), castings (die, sand etc), metal cutting and tool design, machine tools, automation, assembly lines, jigs and fixtures etc. Management subjects makes you strong in ergonomics, manufacturing management, materials management, production planning etc. And therefore production engineering is a combination of manufacturing technology and management techniques. During your engineering course, final semesters mainly consists of management subjects. You can get mechanical equivalent certificate by just writing a test.

SCOPE OF PRODUCTION ENGINEERING

online engineering degree/engineering degree online/online engineering courses/engineering technology online/engineering courses online/engineering technician degree online/online engineering technology/electronic engineering online

I hope everyone knows about production engineering. In the present era scope of production engineer is huge. Everyone are confused about the course to opt. Usually in multinational companies a production engineer controls a manufacturing department etc. That means mechanical engineers comes under a production engineer. Please don't misunderstand that a mechanical engineer is below a production engineer. It is just that a production engineer with high grade pay always comes top (in the management area). In my view point a company cannot run smoothly without the help of production engineers because these engineers deal with everything starting from procurement of raw materials to the processes involved till it reach the market.

There are lot of openings in different countries. Experience is the base of all. Try to get more experience, then job offers and pay scale increases. A few fields where production engineer get placed are :

  • Automobile companies- For inspection, quality control, operation of automated equipments etc.
  • Manufacturing industries- For inspection, quality control, operation of automated equipments, to control assembly line, production management etc.
  • Food processing industries- For inspection, quality control, Production management etc.
  • Railways- Manufacturing processes and its control etc.
  • Process industries.
  • Space and other research organizations.
  • Government and private companies.
  • Defense.
  • IT companies.

During the course students fall in love with a subject or two that helps them to understand their taste. For example i fell in love with Industrial Automation and Inspection & Quality control. Therefore i understood specific jobs i should seek and i searched and found a few companies to my interests. I kept visiting those sites to see notifications of job openings. The fact i understood is that one's profile should be good. Every student undergoes internship during their course and for you to be outstanding and to get an upper hand in placements it is always better to do internship abroad during your engineering course

You can also go for higher studies to make your career firm. It is always beneficiary for a production engineer to opt MBA as his higher studies. I as a production engineer prefer MBA because we mainly get placed in production management etc. It is because unlike other branches production engineering involves management. MBA is going to help you a lot. It is better to get a work experience of 2 years in a manufacturing or core company and then go for MBA. If you have a work experience of 3 years in any manufacturing or core companies then you can also go for executive MBA that unlike other MBA's can be completed in 1 year( because of your work experience).

And for those who want to do post graduation in the technical side it is better to do MS abroad in good colleges. The scope of doing MS abroad is too high(especially in Europe). The facility is great and the research is too good. The necessary criteria to do MS abroad is write Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and get a good score. Next is English proficiency tests such as IELTS, TOEFL etc. Get at least 6.5 out 9 to get admissions in  college abroad. You can also do post graduation cheaply but with more value. In India graduates who are interested in research go for M.Tech. But i highly recommend NIT's or IIT's for M.Tech.

HOW TO E MAIL A PROFESSOR FOR AN INTERNSHIP ABROAD?

online engineering degree/engineering degree online/online engineering courses/engineering technology online/engineering courses online/engineering technician degree online/online engineering technology/electronic engineering online
The most important thing is you should be very careful while writing the mail and the words should come from your heart. Send mails to selected professors instead of sending a lot of mails to all professors names that comes in Google. Sending mails to selected professors increases the probability of getting a response from them.

1) You should start applying from September because later all the good colleges get filled with interns and the deadline for scholarships is near the end of November.

2) Create cover letter and resume by yourself and ask for opinions from seniors and professors of your college.
a. Your cover letter must be brief(10-15 lines)
b. Mention your field of interest. You can also mention about your project and industrial visits. You can also mention the subjects that u have learnt which is related to your field of interest.
c. Write briefly that internship is part of your curriculum. Mention the allotted period of time for internship. And specify that it should be done under their guidance.
d. The resume should be of 2 pages. Your CGPA must be highlighted. You can also mention your project and seminar topics.
e. Try to connect your area of interest with the professors work in the mail.
f. If u have liked any of his recent papers u can mention that too.

3) Get a list of top 200 universities from the internet.

4) Choose a country.I would recommend Germany because it has a lot of scholarships and tuition fee is free in many colleges. Next i would recommend France.

5) After choosing colleges check their international ranks and decide.

6) For each college find their website and find the faculty of your area of interest. Try to understand the professor by reading his papers and books.

7) You can apply to 2 professors of the same department. Send the mail to the 2nd professor just after a couple of days from your 1st.

8) Its best to mail them late night so that your mail will be their first mail in inbox when they log-in.

9) Its best to send just 1 mail to one professor. Don't mention any names in Cc or Bcc.
a. Change your area of interest according to the professors.
b. Don't mention anything about funding or money in the first mail. Its better to mention later after there is a response.

10) Now repeat these steps for your preferred colleges in decided countries.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROJECTS FOR ENGINEERING

online engineering degree/engineering degree online/online engineering courses/engineering technology online/engineering courses online/engineering technician degree online/online engineering technology/electronic engineering online
There are 3 types of projects that students can do during engineering. They are:-

1)Industrial projects
Industrial projects are external projects which are done in industries, factories, companies etc.First choose an industry of your interest. Then send a mail to the HR department or call them.If you are lucky they might give a positive response. Then after getting a letter from your department you can visit that industry and choose a department where you wish to do your project.Select a genuine topic. The industry will provide a guide to help you.

2)Internal projects
Internal projects are projects which are done in your college. You can use the college resources such as mechanical workshops, labs etc with permission. You can score more marks if u do an internal project because you do more work.Ofcourse your teachers will help you.

3)Model projects
In this type of project you fabricate parts and you assemble it into final product. You can make a robot for example and can work it with the help of a software.People who are creative and have an idea about models can choose this project.

INTERNSHIPS ABROAD DURING ENGINEERING COURSE

online engineering degree/engineering degree online/online engineering courses/engineering technology online/engineering courses online/engineering technician degree online/online engineering technology/electronic engineering online
I recommend internships to be done abroad during your engineering course rather than doing it in your country. Now a days there a lot of engineers and there is no job for all the engineers. So how are you going to be different from them? Every engineering student during their engineering course undergoes internships and industrial visits. So for you to be different from the rest undergo an internship abroad. You can meet different people from different cultures and you will get better exposure. You can also do industrial visits during your internship.

Everyone wish to do internships abroad but they just don't know where to begin. They search for internship in search engines but are not satisfied. IAESTE is the where you have to begin. The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) is a student exchange organisation that provides students in technical degrees (primarily Science, Engineering and the applied arts) with paid, course-related, training abroad and employers with highly skilled, highly motivated trainees, for long or short term projects. More than 80 countries are involved and exchanging over 4000 traineeships each year worldwide. Each country participating in this program has IAESTE committees through which the exchange is done. In India, Karunya University and MIT are the two IAESTE committees. Be a member in the committee and you can apply for paid internship abroad. Sometimes offers for non-members are also available.

But those who didn't get selected for internship abroad through IAESTE should not be disapointed because there is another way. Different types of internships can be done according to the course that you have done or you are doing. You can send emails to professors of colleges abroad that has a research department of your choice. You get selected according to the project and seminar that you have done and your aggregate marks. I recommend Europe for doing internship because there are many technical colleges which has research department.  If you are lucky they may reply. Then ask about housing expenses etc. If you are lucky they will fund you your housing expenses and medical expenses. They will do everything for the visa work. Internship can be from 1 week to 6 months. You may even get paid for the internship and may even give you a job for you to join after your engineering course. Every engineering curriculum has a time period for doing internship. If you have been selected to do internship please discuss with your course tutor. If everything is fine you are lucky. I have written previously about "best country to do internship".

Have you ever thought about studying abroad where you could meet people coming from different cultures? At least have you thought of visiting a country of another continent and have fun? Well it is a dream in almost everyone's mind and it is not easy to rub it off. Well then why don't you study abroad. Well its too expensive and not affordable. To study in UK or US, an expense of at least 25 lakhs (50,000$) is incurred. Its because the tuition fee and living expense is high. How about a country where the tuition fee is nil? Shocked?

Well it is true and Germany is the country you are looking for. There are two types of colleges in Germany. They are government colleges and private colleges. In private colleges there is tuition fee and it is about 10-15 lakhs (30,000$). Well in government colleges the tuition fee is free. It is because the population is less compared to the resources and the government follows a centrally distributed system. It is free for international students too. Certain colleges have tuition fee which is a small amount and it depends on the course you are opting.

Courses are taken in English and German. You can choose the right study program that suits you. If you know German you can easily find a part time job and you can earn. There are scholarships too which takes care of your expenses like housing, medical etc. That means you can study there absolutely free and can earn too. There are courses which starts either on winter or summer. The number of colleges available on winter is high compared to that on summer.

Application forms can be downloaded from college sites and you can send your resumes along with the the filled application form. Since the tuition fee is free a lot of students apply from different countries and so you must atleast have 7/10 CGPA and should be good in extra curricular activities. If your marks is below 7 then you should write IELTS, GRE etc and get good score in it to compensate your CGPA mark. Writing IELTS, GRE etc depends upon the collegere quirements. There are different types of projects that you can do during your engineering course and remember that the project you choose is a criteria for selecting you.

BEST COUNTRY TO DO INTERNSHIPS

It depends on the course. If you did engineering, then i would recommend Europe. Because there it is easy to get placed in a company. In other countries like USA it is expensive and they will send you back just after your internship because they give preference to their citizens. It is not easy to extend your visa.

I would suggest Germany because there the resources are more and the population is less. They need more manpower and the probability of getting a job there is high and there are a many companies in Germany. The rush towards Germany for doing internship is increasing rapidly.  Surveys shows that Germany is the safest country to study and work.

There are a lot of technical colleges in Germany. Almost every technical college has a research department where interns are required. They prefer international students with good academics. Send your resumes to the head of respective departments. You should email the professors with a good format. If you are selected then you are lucky because you just have to pay your flight tickets. Everything else is free including accommodation, food etc. You will also get a stipend every month. With this stipend you can travel around in Europe and visit famous places like Paris etc.

SCOPE OF PRODUCTION ENGINEERING IN INDIA

online engineering degree/engineering degree online/online engineering courses/engineering technology online/engineering courses online/engineering technician degree online/online engineering technology/electronic engineering online

I have written about production engineering in my previous post. First you have to understand the fact that production B.Tech is equivalent to mechanical B.Tech. So you can apply for mechanical job posts. May be you are worried because there is no news of job openings for production engineers in South India. This is because in south India, companies fill the posts for production engineers with mechanical engineers. This doesn't mean they do not take production engineers. It is just due to lack of production engineers. This is because there is just less colleges in south India which gives production B.Tech degree. But in north India companies need only production engineers to fill production posts. So scope is not less because you can fill both production and mechanical posts. Its best to get work experience of 2 years in a company and then try for a job abroad. The pay scale will be more and it is easy to get settled there.

Scope of production engineering is much more than you can think. Usually in multinational companies a production engineer controls a manufacturing department etc. That means mechanical engineers comes under a production engineer. Please don't misunderstand that a mechanical engineer is below a production engineer. It is just that a production engineer with high grade pay always comes top(in the management area).

There are lot of openings in different countries. Experience is the base of all.Try to get more experience, then job offers and pay scale increases.

Each subject that you study during your course can get you a job and therefore focus a little on the concepts and during the course you will certainly love a subject or two. For example i fell in love with Industrial Automation and Inspection & Quality control. Therefore i understood what kind of jobs i should seek and so i searched and found a few companies relating to my interests. I kept visiting those sites to see notifications of job openings. One thing i understood is that you should have a good profile. Every student undergoes internship during their course and for you to be unique and to get an upper hand in placements its always better to do internship abroad during your engineering course. There are a lot of companies in India and around the world who hires production engineers.

I will mention a few companies who requires production engineer :
  1. NALCO
  2. SAIL
  3. TATA STEEL
  4. TCIL
  5. TATA MOTORS
  6. VOLVO
  7. SYNTHITE
  8. ONGC
  9. FACT
  10. ISRO
  11. AIRFORCE (TECHNICAL ENGINEER)
  12. HAL etc.
I haven't mentioned any IT companies because all IT companies take engineers( irrespective of their branch).  You can also go for higher studies to make your career firm. It is always beneficiary for a production engineer to opt MBA as his higher studies. I as a production engineer prefer MBA because we mainly get placed in production management etc. It is because unlike other branches production involves a lot of management. If you have a work experience of 3 years in any manufacturing or core companies then you can also go for executive MBA which unlike other MBA's can be completed in 1 year( because of your work experience).

But If you are interested in the technical side so much then you can go for M.Tech. You should write GATE exam and obtain good score to do M.Tech in IIT's and NIT's in India. You also need good GATE score to get placed in core companies such as BHEL, SAIL, NTPC etc( Navaratna companies). But If you are going for M.Tech i highly recommend to do it in IIT's or NIT's. You can also do MS in India and abroad as well. M.Tech mainly consists of engineering while MS consists of engineering and research (a lot). The scope of doing MS abroad is so high(especially in Europe). The facility is great and the research over there is too good. The basic criteria to do MS abroad is write Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and get a good score.
