A ship's overall shape is defined on a lines drawing, such as that illustrated in
Figure 2.2. The vessel's design and construction use molded dimensions, which
may be measured to the inside or the outside of the vessel's shell plating, as
specified in the plans. The vessel's shape is defined by various form coefficients,
the most important of which is the block coefficient (CB ) , which can be
applied to the vessel's overall dimensions to give the vessel's displacement:
